Ukraine Tests First Humanoid Robots on the Battlefield

Ukraine has begun evaluating its first humanoid robot-soldiers, specifically the Phantom MK-1 from the American start-up Foundation, on the battlefield. The robots were delivered in February and are intended for reconnaissance missions, aiming to be tested in real-world combat conditions. Foundation plans to improve the capabilities of the robots and examine their performance in dangerous situations, while also considering the prospect of equipping them with weapon systems. Ukraine has emerged as a testing ground for new military technologies, attracting interest from defense companies and start-ups. The use of robotic systems in the field is increasing rapidly, with thousands of robotic operations taking place monthly, primarily in supply missions. Foundation co-founder Mike LeBlanc stated that the robots could take on dangerous roles currently performed by soldiers, reducing human exposure to risks. The company is also in talks with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security for potential use of the Phantoms in patrols along the southern border. Foundation has set a goal to manufacture up to 50,000 Phantom MK-1 units by the end of 2027, with plans for mass production. The robots will not be sold, but will be available for annual lease for approximately $100,000 per unit.
