Foot-and-Mouth Disease: High Probability of Transmission from Occupied Territories

Cyprus is facing outbreaks of foot-and-mouth disease in livestock farms in the province of Larnaca, raising concerns about the potential spread of the disease across the island. Authorities have launched vaccinations as the primary measure to combat the disease, while the origin of the outbreak remains unclear. The head of the Turkish Cypriot Veterinary Association, Burak Toskoy, estimates that there is a high probability that the disease has been transmitted from the occupied territories, although he does not rule out the opposite direction. In the occupied territories, the vaccination of cattle has been completed, while the vaccination of sheep and goats is underway with a target completion date of March, with the help of vaccines donated by the European Union. Epidemiological surveillance is complicated by the Turkish occupation and the difficulty of controlling animal movements across the Green Line, increasing the risk of disease spread. Turkish Cypriot sources point to the inability to fully prevent animal smuggling and their uncontrolled movement.
