Financial Ombudsman Reports Confusion and Rising Foreclosures in Cyprus

Published February 13, 2026, 12:34

The Financial Ombudsman reports widespread confusion regarding her role and indicates that eligible citizens are not seeking assistance due to a lack of awareness. The Ombudsman investigates complaints against banks and financial institutions, with the power to verify debts. However, intervention is not possible in cases with existing court decisions. A significant percentage of foreclosure cases (50%) already have court rulings, prompting a request to Parliament for a law amendment to allow debtors a 3-month mediation period. The implementation of the "Rent for Installment" scheme will clarify which cases qualify for assistance and which will proceed to foreclosure. A substantial increase in foreclosures is anticipated in 2026. The Ombudsman also points out that some eligible applicants have not applied for the scheme based on misinformation, citing an instance where a priest advised a beneficiary against participation. This highlights the need for accurate information and improved financial literacy.
