Tufan Erhürman: New DAÜ Appointments by the 'Cabinet' are Not Legally Valid

Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman is questioning the legality of recent appointments of new members to the Eastern Mediterranean University (DAÜ) by the 'cabinet'. According to Erhürman, the 'legislation' does not give the 'government' the authority to make direct appointments or dismissals of members of the institution's council. The role of the 'cabinet' is limited to submitting proposals, while the final decision rests with the 'presidency'. Erhürman referred to a 'decision' published on December 29, 2025, which provided for the replacement of the 'president' and 'members' of the university's council. Due to the overstepping of powers, Erhürman states that legally no dismissal or new appointment exists. He also expresses his dissatisfaction with the fact that the 'presidency' was informed of the final decision only after its publication. The lack of consultation between the 'institutions' creates administrative and legal problems, according to Erhürman. The issue concerns the administration of the illegal academic institution in occupied Famagusta.
