Trump on Greenland: 'There's No Going Back' – Relations with EU Tested

Donald Trump is reiterating his interest in acquiring Greenland, stating that “there’s no going back” and that the island is “absolutely essential.” These statements are causing concern and testing relations with the European Union, as Greenland is an autonomous territory of Denmark. Trump mentioned that “many meetings” are scheduled around Greenland, without specifying with whom. When asked how far he would go to acquire the island, he enigmatically replied: “You’ll see.” He also stated that Greenland is important for national and international security, citing the construction of the “Golden Dome” for missile defense as an example. At the World Economic Forum in Davos, French President Emmanuel Macron warned of a “slide towards a world without rules,” while Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney emphasized that “the old order is not returning.” Trump, who was initially delayed in arriving in Davos due to a technical issue with his aircraft, is expected to discuss these issues with leaders from around the world. In addition, Trump expressed doubts about NATO’s willingness to help the US in times of need, arguing that while Washington would support its allies, he is not sure he would receive the same in return. Greenland’s Minister of Industry and Raw Materials, Naaja Nathanielsen, stated that Greenlanders are “stunned” by Trump’s statements.
