Trump Meets Machado at the White House: Political Support, No Talk of Venezuelan Elections

US President Donald Trump hosted Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado at the White House for a dinner lacking significant fanfare. The White House stated that President Trump offered Machado an "realistic assessment" of popular support, but no timeline was given for elections in the country. Earlier, White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt stated that elections and their schedule would not be discussed at the dinner, with Trump primarily seeking to understand the situation in Venezuela. Following the meal, Machado stated that "we can always count on President Trump for the freedom of Venezuela." She described the meeting as very positive and "wonderful". However, Machado currently lacks a clear role for the future of Venezuela, as Trump has also communicated with interim President Delcy Rodriguez. The White House characterized Rodriguez's government as "extremely cooperative," noting that it has implemented American demands. According to reports, Trump initially did not believe Machado could lead the country after Nicolas Maduro's removal, stating she was not sufficiently respected. However, the meeting appears to have influenced his opinion. It remains to be seen if Machado managed to change Trump's mind, perhaps with a gesture like gifting him the Nobel Peace Prize, though the Norwegian committee reminds that the prize cannot be gifted.
