Trade Unions to President: Minimum Wage Insufficient

Trade unions SEK, PEO, and DEOK have submitted a memorandum to the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, expressing the view that the national minimum wage is insufficient and does not meet the needs of workers, given the increased cost of living. They also request an extension of the application of collective agreements, a revision of the strategy for employing workers from third countries, and improvements to the 'Ergani 2' system to better protect workers' rights. The unions reject the OEB's position that the discussion on the minimum wage is complete, emphasizing that its amount is not adequately linked to the median wage and hourly performance. They highlight the social consequences of stagnation and call for substantial dialogue with the government. At the same time, they are seeking improvements to the 'Ergani 2' system for more effective worker protection. The first meeting of the Labor Advisory Body with the new Minister of Labor is scheduled, with the aim of setting priorities and timelines in a period of increased expectations and tensions in the labor market.
