Tourists Ignored Rescue Efforts at Avakas Gorge, Attempted to Enter During Operation

Yesterday, Wednesday, March 25th, 31 tourists, including children, were trapped in the Avakas Gorge in Paphos due to heavy rainfall and rising water levels. The Fire Service carried out two successive rescue operations, first rescuing 26 people and then another 5. Ropes and life vests were used to safely transport the excursionists. The Fire Service spokesperson, Koulla Mesaritou, emphasized the need for greater public caution, as after the completion of the operations, other tourists attempted to enter the gorge, forcing authorities to stop them. In the first incident, the Fire Service responded to a call for 26 people, 20 adults and 6 children, and rescued them safely. In the second incident, a couple with their child were deep inside the gorge, while two other people were located by the Police in a safe location after a mobilization of the EMAC. Ms. Mesaritou reiterated the call for caution, given that the area remains dangerous due to weather conditions. The Fire Service is on standby to respond to any new incidents, but prevention and adherence to safety instructions are vital.
