Tourism Success with Asterisks – Infrastructure, Climate, and Quality Under Scrutiny

The Deputy Minister of Tourism, Kostas Koumis, presented the Ministry's strategy for 2026 and discussed the challenges facing the tourism sector with local stakeholders in Paphos. 2025 was hailed as the best year in the history of Cypriot tourism, with the goal of continuing this success through improved tourist experiences. Paphos played a crucial role in this success, with arrivals exceeding 30% of the total. Despite the success, Mr. Koumis emphasized the need to address new challenges, primarily climate change, which requires collective action. No issues were identified with local authorities, while progress was reported on the Paphos marina project, with contract signings expected in early 2027. The Mayor of Paphos, Faidonas Faidonos, described 2025 as an excellent year and stressed the need for proper planning to maintain success. From 2026 onwards, the focus should shift from quantity to quality of tourism services. Mr. Faidonos requested the support of the Deputy Ministry for three important projects for Paphos: the marina, the road axis to the airport, and the expansion of Paphos Airport. Improving infrastructure and connectivity to the airport are considered critical for further tourism development in the region.
