Torrential Rains in Colombia: At Least 22 Dead – Situation is Dramatic (pictures)

Torrential rains have hit Colombia in the last twelve days, causing the death of at least 22 people and leaving thousands of homes flooded. Rainfall is unusually heavy for this time of year, and authorities report that at least 9,000 households have been flooded in the areas of Cordoba and Sucre. Residents are trying to salvage their belongings with makeshift boats and trucks, as the water reaches waist-deep in some areas. Many have lost everything and are in urgent need of assistance. 43-year-old Enid Gomez said she lost all her belongings and is worried about the future. According to authorities, a cold front that reached the Colombian Caribbean has increased rainfall by more than 64% in January compared to the average. The National Institute of Meteorology (IDEAM) emphasizes that this phenomenon is occurring in the context of the climate crisis. Authorities have announced that at least 13 people died during the past week in various regions of Colombia due to the heavy rains. The situation remains critical and authorities urge residents to remain vigilant and follow their instructions.
