Tom Barrack: Historic Opportunity for Kurds in New Syria - US Plan

US Ambassador to Turkey-Syria Tom Barrack has described the current situation as the most significant opportunity in decades for Syrian Kurds, directly linking it to the transition period following Bashar al-Assad and the new government led by President Ahmed al-Sharaa. He emphasizes that this transition could lead to the full integration of Kurds into a unified Syrian state, with full citizenship rights and cultural guarantees. Ambassador Barrack states that for decades Kurds have been deprived of these rights, particularly during the rule of Bashar al-Assad, when thousands lived without citizenship and under restrictions. The US military presence in Syria began as a collaboration to defeat ISIS, with Kurdish forces playing a crucial role. However, the ambassador points out that the situation has changed, as Syria now has a recognized government that has joined the international coalition against terrorism. This means that the initial role of Kurdish forces as the main force against terrorism has largely been completed, and Damascus declares itself ready to fully take over security. The United States, according to Barrack, is working for a smooth and peaceful transition, having held contacts with the Syrian government and Kurdish leadership, leading to an agreement to integrate fighters into the national army.
