TikTok, Youtube and Meta on Trial Over Addiction of Young People

Meta Platforms, TikTok, and YouTube will face trial this week, accused of exacerbating and causing a mental health crisis among young people. The trial, to be held in the Superior Court of California, County of Los Angeles, serves as a test case for thousands of other lawsuits seeking damages for harm attributed to social media. The plaintiff, a 19-year-old woman, alleges she became addicted to the platforms due to their attention-grabbing design, leading to depression and suicidal thoughts. The case focuses on the concept of “social media addiction” and will be the first time the tech giants will be called to defend themselves in court for alleged harm caused by their products. A crucial element of the case is a federal law that largely shields platforms like Instagram and TikTok from legal liability for user-generated content. The outcome of the trial could have significant implications for the companies’ legal defense and lead to further lawsuits. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg is expected to testify as a witness.
