The Schengen Year and Beyond?

The Schengen Year and Beyond?

Cyprus faces a critical year, with the most important challenge being its accession to the Schengen area during its presidency of the European Union Council in 2026. This accession would equate Cyprus with the other EU member states, facilitating the movement of citizens and businesses. However, achieving this goal is linked to resolving the Cyprus issue, as it requires control over the ports and airports of the occupied territories. The government is called upon to negotiate with Turkey and the Turkish Cypriot side in order to find a solution that ensures the security of the island and opens the way for accession to Schengen, either through reunification or through a definitive partition.
