The 'Revenge' of History in the Eastern Mediterranean

The article analyzes the current geopolitical situation in the Eastern Mediterranean, drawing historical parallels with ancient Greece and the general Kimon. The mission of the new Greek frigate “Kimon” to Cyprus symbolizes the timeless connection of Hellenism with the island and the need for national defense. The author emphasizes the need to activate the “Unified Defense Doctrine” of Greece-Cyprus, pointing out that the effective protection of Cyprus requires coordinated actions and not occasional decisions. He criticizes the policy of “positive agenda” towards Turkey, considering that it undermines the confrontation of Turkish expansionism. He proposes the establishment of a European Defense in the Eastern Mediterranean, with a permanent deployment of European forces in Cyprus, starting with Greek air and naval forces. He stresses the need to activate the EU’s mutual defense assistance clause in the event of an attack on Cyprus. Finally, the author states that Greece and Cyprus are in a favorable situation to confront Turkish expansionism, but warns of the existence of “useful idiots” who undermine these efforts, as happened in the past with the invasion of Cyprus in 1974.
