The Residence: An Explosive Whodunnit in the White House

The mystery series “The Residence,” available on Netflix, is a delightfully quirky television phenomenon in the style of Agatha Christie, breathing a fresh, comedic breath into the corridors of the White House. This eight-episode series trades political seriousness for a crazy, witty detective novel that feels like a satirical, high-tension “cousin” to the film “Knives Out.” The plot begins with the discovery of the body of the chief of staff during an official dinner in honor of the Prime Minister of Australia. This is where Cordelia Cap, played by the wonderful and unmatched Uzo Aduba, enters the scene. Cap is a brilliant, sarcastic, and hilarious detective who balances her genius abilities with a passion for birds that borders on obsession. Aduba’s magnetic performance supports a huge, idiosyncratic cast—from a perpetually drunk butler to a disgruntled pastry chef—while navigating the “up-down” tensions of the presidential mansion. Technically, the series is an adventure that uses a clever flashback structure. The investigation is framed by a chaotic Congressional hearing, which contributes to demystifying the misinformation surrounding the case. The direction tends towards the absurd with cartoonish imagery and a fast pace, ensuring that the puzzle remains engaging and does not become exhausting. Highlights include an enjoyable appearance by Kylie Minogue and the hilarious clashes between the household staff and the Secret Service “types.” Although the plot explores the complex ways in which people use each other to hide their secrets, it never loses that infectious sense of joy. It’s a captivating escape from everyday life that manages to be completely “crazy” without ever losing its essence, keeping you in suspense until the very last second. Bottom line? Watch it! It’s a wonderful eight-hour series that proves that a murder in the White House can indeed be an enjoyable experience…
