The Need for Transparency in Gifts

The lack of transparency regarding gifts received by the President of the Republic, the First Lady, ministers, and deputy ministers is a matter of discussion. While the Parliament applies a framework of transparency for gifts received by its members, there is no corresponding obligation to declare or disclose gifts received by government officials. This raises concerns about the possibility of undeclared gifts, even of high value, remaining in the possession of the recipients. The absence of transparency is considered a problem, as it raises questions about transparency and accountability in public administration. The lack of rules for gifts can lead to conflicts of interest and erode public trust in politicians. The need for greater transparency is underscored by the fact that public power should operate in the public interest and be accountable to citizens. The disclosure of gifts received by government officials could help strengthen transparency and accountability. Therefore, it is proposed to adopt a framework of transparency for the executive branch as well, similar to the one in force in Parliament. This could include the obligation to declare and disclose gifts received by the President, the First Lady, ministers, and deputy ministers.
