The Criminal Advantage of Occupation

Published January 5, 2026, 07:16

The occupied territories have become a 'land of opportunity' for organized crime, with activities such as human trafficking, drug and arms trafficking, smuggling and money laundering through casinos and other businesses. The Global Organized Crime Index 2024/2025 report confirms the widespread criminal activity in the area, which is facilitated by the absence of the rule of law and dependence on Turkey. The buying and selling of stolen Greek Cypriot land has reached enormous proportions, involving Israelis, Russians, Ukrainians and Turks. This activity serves as a means of money laundering and contributes to the consolidation of the occupation's fait accompli. The Republic of Cyprus is accused of inexplicable laxity in dealing with the problem, despite the serious consequences for the economy and society. The lack of effective action allows organized crime to flourish in the occupied territories. The report emphasizes that the occupation is not only a national problem, but an active industry of illegality within Europe. Cyprus has a responsibility to address the problem with determination and protect the interests of its citizens.
