The Blessing of the Waters, a Top Tradition of Epiphany

Epiphany is one of the most important religious and folk festivals in Cyprus, with a particular emphasis in Paphos, where traditions are kept alive and passed down through generations. Tradition researcher Anna Tselepou points out that the Blessing of the Waters is the top tradition of Epiphany, with deep symbolism and strong participation from the local community. On Epiphany Day, the priest throws the Holy Cross into the sea, rivers, or tanks, and young people dive to retrieve it. According to popular belief, whoever catches the Cross receives a blessing for the entire year. At the same time, the tradition of blessing homes and fields is important, with the priest visiting the homes of the faithful to protect them from evil spirits. Other traditions that are maintained include the preparation of xerotigana (fried dough pastries), which are shared with the poor, the sick, and those who mourn, as well as the offering of a monetary gift to children, known as pouloustrina. Anna Tselepou emphasizes that the traditions of Epiphany are not merely rituals, but living elements of Cyprus's cultural identity.
