The Cypriot government is considering strengthening fire safety in hotels and tourist accommodations through the establishment of a special temporary operating license regime. The bill, submitted by MP Kyriakos Hadjigiannis, aims to address the long-standing issue of numerous tourist units operating without full licensing. The new regulation will allow the issuance of temporary operating licenses under strict conditions, with an emphasis on the implementation of comprehensive fire safety plans, which will be determined by the Fire Service based on technical studies. Mr. Hadjigiannis stressed that the proposal does not involve a relaxation of safety rules, but rather their strengthening, while dismissing fears of increased risk. The practice of successive annual extensions, he said, has not proven effective in solving the problem. The proposed regulation is considered the most realistic option to avoid the immediate closure of unlicensed units or the perpetuation of the existing situation. During the discussion of the bill in the Parliamentary Committee on Energy, proposals were submitted and incorporated by the members. Mr. Hadjigiannis emphasized that this regulation serves both public safety and the national economic interest, as a legal framework is essential for attracting investment and avoiding unfair competition. In summary, the bill seeks to create a legal framework for tourist units that do not fully meet licensing requirements, while ensuring enhanced fire safety and overall security in the tourism sector.
