Teenager Killed as Bus Hits Protesters in Israel

An 18-year-old was killed and three others injured when a bus struck protesters in Jerusalem during a demonstration by ultra-Orthodox Jews against military conscription. Magen David Adom (MDA), the Israeli equivalent of the Red Cross, reported that the bus hit three pedestrians before running over the young man, who was trapped under the vehicle and died at the scene. Police ruled out terrorism, while the bus driver claimed his vehicle was attacked by rioters, describing the incident as “unfortunate.” The demonstration began peacefully but later turned violent, with some protesters blocking roads, damaging buses, setting fire to trash cans, and attacking police officers and journalists. Israeli President Isaac Herzog expressed his sorrow over the tragic incident and called for de-escalation and responsibility. The case has sparked strong reactions and discussions regarding the issue of conscription of ultra-Orthodox Jews, which remains controversial in Israel. The issue of conscripting ultra-Orthodox Jews is particularly sensitive, as they have long enjoyed exemption from mandatory military service, causing resentment in the rest of Israeli society, especially during a time when many soldiers remain mobilized due to the situation in the Gaza Strip. The ultra-Orthodox constitute 14% of the Jewish population in Israel and a significant pool of potential recruits.
