Tax Revenue Increases for Households and Businesses

Government revenue increased by approximately €750 million in the period of January-November 2025, mainly due to increased taxes and contributions paid by households and businesses. Despite the revenue increase, the General Government surplus decreased to €1.159.4 million (3.2% of GDP) from €1.314.3 million (3.8% of GDP) the previous year, due to faster growth in government spending. The main sources of revenue growth were social contributions and income and wealth taxes, while revenue from services also increased. Spending increased in areas such as staff compensation and social benefits, while decreasing in paid interest and subsidies. The increase in taxes indicates an increased financial burden on households and businesses.
