Sweden Sends Fighter Jets to Greenland as Part of NATO Mission

Sweden announced it will send Gripen fighter jets to Greenland for patrols as part of NATO's new 'Arctic Sentry' mission. This move comes at a time of increasing strategic importance of the Arctic region and aims, in part, to mend relations with the US following disagreements over defense cooperation in the area. Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson emphasized Sweden's responsibility as a NATO ally to contribute to the security of the Alliance's territories. The aircraft will be stationed in Iceland, where six Swedish fighters are already based as part of NATO's rapid reaction force. Sweden's participation will include exercises in cooperation with the Danish Air Force, as well as training exercises with Swedish armed forces units in Greenland. This mission marks NATO's increasing focus on the Arctic and its efforts to ensure stability in the region.
