Supreme Court to Decide on Sykas' Immunity; DISY Session Postponed Again

Published January 12, 2026, 19:20

The case of Nikos Sykas, accused of assaulting a woman, is before the Supreme Court, where the Attorney General's request for a waiver of his parliamentary immunity is being considered. Sykas' lawyer requested time to submit a memorandum, but did not object to the immunity waiver request. Sykas himself stated that he does not want immunity and respects the rule of law, adding that the complainant has withdrawn her complaint. The Attorney General's Office argues that the withdrawal of the complaint does not negate the duty of the prosecution authorities to act ex officio in such cases. A key element of the case is the forensic examination of the complainant. The case has been adjourned until next Thursday. Meanwhile, the DISY Political Bureau meeting to ratify Sykas' non-candidacy in the parliamentary elections has been postponed again, until the proceedings in the Supreme Court are completed.
