Students 'Freeze' in School Classrooms - Protest Disrupts Lessons

Students at the Acropolis Lyceum protested by abstaining from classes for two periods due to the lack of heating in the school buildings. They report that central heating is not functioning in much of the school, and the air conditioners, which could have provided heating, remain out of order despite previous assurances. The students claim they had warned about this possibility during a previous strike concerning the air conditioning, but no preventative measures were taken. The students state that the conditions are unsuitable for teaching and concentration, especially as the protest day was one of the coldest of the winter. They express their frustration at the lack of response to their demands. The President of the Central Student Council, Achilleas Panteli, mentioned that they had received promises that the air conditioners would be repaired by the end of the previous year, but these promises were not fulfilled. The situation is worsened by the fact that the lack of heating is a recurring problem over the past three years. The President of the Pan-Cypriot Federation of School Boards, Nikos Megalos, explained that the delay in reconnecting the air conditioners is due to the difficulty in finding available electricians. Regarding the heating, he stated that the Board was informed about a fault in one wing of the school and the maintenance company has been notified.
