Student Supervision Outside School Hours: Responsibility Lies with Education Ministry Following Parliament Decision

The House of Representatives approved an amendment to the Elementary Education Law, regulating the issue of supervising students outside school hours. The amendment, approved with 18 votes in favor and 15 abstentions from AKEL, transfers the responsibility for supervision to the Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth, instead of the school boards as initially proposed. The regulation was deemed necessary to fill the gap in the safety of students who remain at school before and after hours. The proposer of the bill, Alekos Tryfonidis, emphasized that there was a serious safety issue for children, as they were exposed to risks. The implementation of the regulation will begin in the 2026-2027 school year and provides for supervision for about half an hour before and after school hours. The Ministry will take responsibility and proceed with consultations for the implementation of the measure.
