Strong Earthquake Shakes Mount Athos – Monks Report 'Chandeliers Swaying'

A strong earthquake of magnitude 4.9 struck near Karyes on Mount Athos last night, causing concern and minor damage. Reports indicate cracks in old buildings and a piece of the chandelier falling off in the Nave of the Representation of the Holy Monastery of Esfigmenou. At the time of the earthquake, the Great Canon service was being held in the Nave, causing monks and pilgrims to exit the building in fear. Reports of damage to sketes and cells have been received, with pilgrims reporting that the earthquake lasted and was accompanied by a roar. Video from a security camera at the seat of Saint Tryphon captured the sound of the earthquake. Monks described the intensity of the tremor, saying that chandeliers were swaying and small objects were falling from shelves. The earthquake caused unrest in the area, however there are no reports of serious injuries. Authorities are monitoring the situation and assessing the damage.
