Strange Behavior in Dogs and Cats That May Indicate a Serious Health Problem

The dangerous behavior of "head pressing," which involves persistently pressing the head against hard surfaces, is often overlooked by pet owners, who attribute it to quirkiness or playfulness. However, head pressing is a serious medical symptom that suggests a potential problem in the animal's brain or nervous system. Possible causes include encephalitis, liver or kidney disease, brain tumors, strokes, inflammation, severe head injuries, hepatic or renal encephalopathy, and exposure to toxins. Diagnosis can be difficult due to the variety of potential causes, but immediate veterinary examination is essential. The veterinarian will take a detailed history and may need to perform tests such as fundoscopy, blood pressure measurement, brain imaging (CT or MRI), and blood and urine tests. In addition to head pressing, other concerning signs that may accompany the condition include abnormal vocalizations, compulsive walking, circling, disorientation, behavioral changes, balance or vision problems, seizures, and head or eye injuries. It is important to distinguish head pressing from normal animal behavior, such as rubbing their heads on people or objects to express affection. Persistent and compulsive head pressing is a clear sign that something is wrong and requires immediate medical attention.
