Strait of Hormuz: Ship Transits Down 80%

Traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has collapsed by 80%, with only 28 ships passing through in the last 24 hours, compared to the usual daily average of 138. Shipping companies are avoiding the area following warnings from Iran's Revolutionary Guard that the passage is "closed to all ships". This has created a de facto choke point in the global energy supply chain, with reports of potential mine laying and the presence of explosive speedboats. NATO Shipping Centre warns of the risk of attacks with magnetic mines. Several incidents were recorded on March 1st, including attacks on ships with missiles and unmanned vessels, as well as explosions near other ships. In one incident, a tanker was damaged and its crew evacuated. Simultaneously, interference with AIS, GPS and communication systems is being observed in the area. The risk assessment for the region is high, especially for ships with American or Israeli affiliation. Naval escorts are not considered a sufficient solution, as Iran possesses a multi-layered arsenal.
