Starlink to Lower Satellite Orbits for Safety Reasons

Starlink, SpaceX's satellite internet company, plans to lower the orbit of its satellites from 550 kilometers to 480 kilometers during 2026. The goal of this restructuring is to increase satellite safety, following an incident in December where a satellite experienced an anomaly and caused debris in space. Lowering the orbit will reduce the likelihood of collisions with other objects in space, as the number of objects and satellite constellations is lower below 500 kilometers. The company acknowledges the increase in spacecraft in Earth orbit and the need for greater safety.
