Stamp Duty Abolished, But Lawyers Still Pay

Despite the abolition of the stamp duty law by the Parliament last month, lawyers in Cyprus continue to be required to pay the relevant fees for filing legal documents in court. The Pan Cypriot Bar Association has already submitted a letter of protest to the Supreme Court, pointing out that the continued payment of fees contradicts the abolition law. The Supreme Court has assured that the issue will be discussed at its next session, while noting that it had not been informed of the law's abolition. The President of the Bar Association, Michalis Vorkas, stated that the abolition has not yet been implemented in practice, creating problems with access to justice and raising questions about the refund of already paid funds. A government source clarified that the abolition only applies to stamp duty and not court fees, and that amendments to court regulations and legislation are required for the same to apply there.
