Speakers at Ceremony Condemn Turkey, Support Ukraine, and Praise Cyprus

The opening ceremony of the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of Europe, held at the Nicosia Municipal Theatre, was marked by strong messages condemning Turkey and supporting Ukraine. President Christodoulides welcomed European leaders, emphasizing that Cyprus will be the voice of the 27 member states and will continue to play a leading role in the Eastern Mediterranean. He pledged to promote the goals and visions of the EU, as well as to strengthen Cyprus's diplomatic capabilities, given its experience with occupation and human rights violations. President Christodoulides expressed confidence that Cyprus, having successfully overcome previous crises, can support Ukraine and promote peace and security in the region. He invoked the ancient saying “strength in unity” and underlined the need for a stronger and united Europe, capable of protecting its citizens and interests. In his address, Ukrainian President Zelenskyy thanked President Christodoulides for the invitation and expressed respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Cyprus, requesting the same for Ukraine. He acknowledged Cyprus's commitment to peace and its equal voice in European bodies. The ceremony marked the assumption of the Presidency by Cyprus, which seeks to strengthen the EU's position as a force for stability, security and autonomy, while also promoting enlargement and cooperation with neighboring countries. Cyprus, as a country that has experienced occupation, wishes to be a voice for peace, security and the protection of human rights.
