Spanish Frigate in Cyprus Part of European Mission, Minister Says

Spanish Minister for the Presidency, Justice and Relations with Parliament, Félix Bolaños, stated that the Spanish frigate “Cristóbal Colón” sent to Cyprus is part of a European mission, along with other European forces, to support Cyprus. The frigate had already participated in a mission with the French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle and other fleets of European countries in the Baltic Sea. Mr. Bolaños emphasized that the mission is European and aims to protect and provide anti-aircraft defense for Cyprus. The frigate was redirected from the mission in the Baltic Sea to participate in the mission in Cyprus. At the same time, the opposition Partido Popular requested that the decision to send the frigate be approved by the Spanish Congress, warning Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez that he cannot endanger the lives of Spanish military personnel without the approval of parliament. Mr. Bolaños replied that the mission is European and consists of European partners, without the need to activate Article 42(7) of the Treaty on the European Union, which provides for the mutual defense clause.
