Spain: Catholic Church to Compensate Victims of Sexual Abuse – Over 1,200 Complaints

The Catholic Church in Spain has reached an agreement with the Spanish government to compensate victims of sexual abuse whose cases have expired or involve deceased perpetrators. The agreement comes after extensive revelations of sexual abuse by members of the clergy, with over 1,200 complaints registered since 2021. Investigations suggest the number of victims could reach hundreds of thousands. Under the agreement, the Ombudsman will assess each complaint and propose the type of compensation – financial, psychological, moral, or symbolic. The Church has already paid out approximately 2 million euros in compensation, but the new process aims to facilitate those who do not wish to have direct contact with the Church.
