Spain: Catholic Church to Compensate Victims of Sexual Abuse

The Catholic Church in Spain has agreed with the government to compensate victims of sexual abuse whose cases have expired due to statute of limitations or the death of the perpetrator. This agreement marks a shift from decades of silence and oblivion to an effort to restore justice. The scandal came to light in 2021 with revelations of more than 1,200 cases, similar to scandals in other countries. Research estimates that there are hundreds of thousands of victims. The Ombudsman will review each case and propose appropriate compensation, while the Church has already paid approximately 2 million euros to victims.
