SOS for Stray Animals: Few Adoptions, Many Animals in Need of Love and Care

Published February 17, 2026, 17:22

The increasing number of stray animals in Cyprus and the low response from the public to adoptions are causing concern among those responsible. Shelters like Simba Animal Aids Cyprus are facing overcapacity, housing 120 dogs, while new animals are constantly being added, even found abandoned in garbage bins. The shelter's manager, Alexandros Oriettas, emphasizes the need for measures such as tagging and sterilization, as well as a change in public mindset regarding adoption versus buying. The Commissioner for the Environment and Animal Welfare, Antonia Theodosiou, reports positive changes in children's education regarding animal care, following actions in schools. However, adoption rates remain lower than desired. The shelter thoroughly checks potential adopters and the living conditions they can offer. Additionally, the shelter organizes volunteer days where citizens can walk the dogs. This initiative, in collaboration with the Municipality of Strovolos and the Commissioner's Office, aims to raise public awareness and promote adoption. Mr. Oriettas mentions a worrying trend where elderly dogs are abandoned by their owners, possibly to avoid the grief of loss. The need for greater responsibility and love towards animals is imperative.
