MEP Fidias Panagiotou found himself at the center of strong reactions due to an offensive characterization he attributed to people with intellectual disabilities. Initially facing criticism, Mr. Panagiotou apologized, describing the characterization as unintentional and expressing his regret. However, the apology was accompanied by questioning the motives of the reactions, claiming they were linked to the rise of Direct Democracy in the polls. Mr. Panagiotou subsequently posted a video featuring critical statements by the Deputy President of DISY, Efthymios Dipilaros. This move provoked further outrage, with the Cyprus Paralympic Sports Federation (CYSOA) reacting immediately, protesting the use of photos of Cypriot Paralympic athletes in the “ostensible” apology video. CYSOA accused Mr. Panagiotou of outrage and attributing political motives to public anger. According to reports, the Cyprus National Paralympic Committee is also preparing to file a complaint against Mr. Panagiotou to the relevant bodies of the European Parliament. The case has caused widespread condemnation and has cast doubt on the public image of the MEP. Fidias Panagiotou's apology, although given, is considered by many to be insufficient due to the simultaneous attempt to politicize the criticism he received. The use of photos of athletes without their consent worsened the situation and led to strong reactions from organizations representing people with disabilities.
