Snowfall Blankets Troodos Mountains - Rain and Potential Storms Tonight

The National Forest Park of Troodos is covered in snow today, January 9, 2026, offering beautiful landscapes to visitors, according to the Department of Forests. Snowfall is more intense above 1,600 meters, with significant snow accumulation above 1,700 meters. At the Jubilee Hotel, the snow has reached 4 centimeters, and at Chionistra, 6 centimeters. Snowflakes have also been recorded at lower altitudes, around 1,400-1,500 meters. Private meteorologist Eric Kittas explains that the phenomena are due to the Sea Effect Rain/Snow mechanism, with clouds entering from the northwest sea area and affecting mainly the mountains and the area around the Paphos Forest – Troodos. The Department of Meteorology has issued a yellow warning for strong southwesterly and northwesterly winds, 6-7 Beaufort, with gusts up to 8 Beaufort, which will affect the entire island until 10:00 PM today. Tonight, cloudy skies are expected with rain in the west and north, which will gradually spread to other areas. Snowfall is expected in the mountains, while isolated thunderstorms are not ruled out in the northwest. Temperatures will drop to around 9 degrees Celsius inland and on the coast, and around 1 degree Celsius in the mountains. The Department of Forests calls on visitors to respect the environment and move with caution, while the fire engine is being converted into a snowplow to facilitate movement in the mountainous areas.
