Cyprus to Implement Enhanced Mass Notification System for Crisis Situations

The government is proceeding with the implementation of a “mass population notification system in crisis situations,” which is expected to be completed in June. The aim is to provide timely and accurate information to citizens in the event of an emergency. The Administrator of Civil Defence, Maria Papa, stated that the state is at a good level of readiness, but acknowledged the existence of weaknesses. Ms. Papa emphasized the importance of preparation and prevention, without causing panic, and added that Civil Defence is working to address various challenges. At the same time, she called on citizens to follow announcements and take the necessary self-protection measures. A recent test of sending SMS self-protection messages, initiated by the Deputy Ministry of Innovation, revealed some weaknesses, which are under review for immediate resolution. The government intends to repeat the test in the coming days. The new system will be refined and will provide timely and accurate information in crisis situations, while also strengthening citizens' resilience and their ability to cope with risk effectively.
