Smart Meter Installation Ahead of Schedule in Cyprus: Consumption Control from Mobile – Next Installation Locations

The installation of smart meters across Cyprus is progressing faster than initially planned. Approximately 220,000 meters have already been installed, while the initial target was 250,000 by June 2026. EAC estimates that the total target of 400,000 meters will be achieved earlier than January 2027. The project is partially funded by the Recovery and Resilience Fund, totaling €48 million. The installation process is progressing smoothly, without any reported issues. Consumers can monitor their consumption through the EAC website, and a mobile application will soon be available. Smart meters record electricity consumption and automatically send data to the provider. They will enable the detection of electricity theft, better regulation of consumption based on fluctuations in electricity prices, and the implementation of more flexible tariffs. Consumers will be able to adjust the operation of their devices to times of lower prices, reducing costs. Additionally, remote disconnection and reconnection of electricity supply will be provided, as well as immediate information on consumption, so that consumers can identify any unusual usage levels.
