Small Hope for Restoration of Vati Landfill

The restoration of the Vati Landfill in Limassol, a project with obligations to the EU, has remained pending for years despite repeated announcements. The project, which began to be studied in 2018, aims to restore the environment, protect groundwater and utilize the space for energy production. The delay has created serious public health and safety problems, as well as environmental impacts. Despite the environmental approval issued in 2020 and the planning to start work in 2023, the project has not progressed. Recently, there appears to be a small hope for the restoration of Vati, as the award of the tender for the execution of the works is expected. However, the award has not yet been completed and the start of the works depends on the absence of appeals. The completion of the project is expected to take 22 months for the restoration and 40 months for the construction of new infrastructure. The successful implementation of the project is vital for the protection of the environment and public health in the area.
