Sick Vulture Under Observation: Game and Fauna Service Attempts Capture

The Game and Fauna Service in Cyprus is on alert regarding a vulture believed to be injured or ill, a species facing extinction. The bird has been under surveillance for days with the aim of capturing and providing medical care. It has been spotted by citizens in the Oroklini area, with photos circulating on social media. The Service is aware that the vulture hasn't fed for days and is monitoring its behavior as it moves to areas where prey is scarce. They have equipment and trained personnel for capture, potentially even during the night. The vulture population in Cyprus is estimated at around 40 individuals, and efforts are underway to preserve and increase their numbers through programs like LIFE “Life with Vultures”, which includes importing vultures from Spain. Additionally, efforts are being made to address threats to vultures, such as poisoning and electrocution, in collaboration with the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) to insulate power poles.
