Shift from Net Metering to Net Billing Drives Photovoltaic Applications in Cyprus

Published December 31, 2025, 20:11

In Cyprus, the transition from the net metering to the net billing system for photovoltaics has triggered a surge in applications, as thousands of households rushed to submit their requests before January 1, 2026, when the new regulations will take effect. Net metering allowed for the offsetting of generated and consumed energy, while net billing will charge consumers for the difference, also considering network costs. According to data, approximately 81,000 households already have installed photovoltaics, with another 4,000 applications pending. The change is considered fairer, as those who cannot install photovoltaics will no longer bear the cost of offsetting. EAC announced that from January 1, 2026, it will sign contracts only for net billing and virtual net billing.
