Shell and Total Invoke Force Majeure for Qatar LNG Contracts

Energy giants Shell and TotalEnergies, as well as Asian companies, have informed customers that they are invoking force majeure for deliveries of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Qatar. This move comes after Qatar announced a temporary halt to production at a facility with a capacity of 77 million tons per year and declared force majeure on LNG shipments. Shell, the world's largest LNG trader, declined to comment, while TotalEnergies did not respond immediately. Both companies have long-standing partnerships with QatarEnergy and are participating in the expansion of the North Field. It is estimated that Shell receives approximately 6.8 million tons of LNG annually from Qatar and TotalEnergies approximately 5.2 million tons. Qatar's Energy Minister stated that restoring deliveries would take weeks to months, even if the war stopped. The force majeure notices initially concern deliveries for March, with impacts expected from April.
