Shaken Baby Syndrome: A Serious Form of Abuse with Potentially Fatal Consequences

Shaken Baby Syndrome is a severe form of abuse occurring when an infant or very young child is violently shaken. Due to their weak neck muscles and relatively large heads, babies are particularly vulnerable to brain injury from shaking. This can cause brain hemorrhages, swelling, permanent neurological damage, or even death, often without visible external trauma. The syndrome is frequently linked to moments of intense frustration or loss of control by the caregiver. Even a few seconds of shaking can inflict irreversible harm. Symptoms include excessive sleepiness, irritability, difficulty feeding or breathing, seizures, and loss of consciousness. Prevention is crucial, as educating and supporting parents and caregivers can help avert such incidents.
