Shadow of ISIS Return After Clashes in Northern Syria

France, Britain, Germany, and the United States have expressed concern over a potential resurgence of the Islamic State (ISIS) in northern Syria following recent clashes and the extension of a ceasefire. These countries are urging Syrian government forces and Kurdish fighters to prevent the creation of security vacuums that could be exploited by jihadists, particularly around ISIS detention centers. They have agreed to convene an urgent meeting of the International Coalition against ISIS to address these concerns. The diplomats are also calling on all parties involved to agree to a permanent ceasefire and work towards the peaceful integration of northeastern Syria into a unified and sovereign state that respects the rights of all its citizens. The concern focuses on the camps and prisons where the SDF were guarding thousands of former ISIS fighters and their families. The US has begun transferring detainees, including Europeans, to Iraq in order to prevent escapes and limit the strengthening of ISIS forces. The goal is to transfer up to 7,000 suspects. The organization has regained strength after the change of regime in Syria in 2024. The US, France, and Britain have recently carried out military strikes against ISIS in Syria, attempting to prevent the revival of the organization that had controlled vast areas in Syria and Iraq before its defeat in 2019.
