Severe Water Shortage in Cyprus Villages as Vizakia Dam Dries Up

Residents of five communities in the province of Nicosia are in despair due to a severe water shortage, as the Vizakia Dam is almost completely empty. The President of the Vizakia Community Council, Eleni Neoptolemou, stated that the villages of Vizakia and Potami are facing the biggest problem, as they have no drinking water at all. Water cuts have been continuous for two months, particularly affecting livestock farmers and agricultural workers. Despite efforts and meetings with government officials, there has been no substantial response. Ms. Neoptolemou appealed to the state to take action and provide for the needs of the communities, emphasizing that the situation is dramatic and residents cannot survive without water. Dam levels in Cyprus are low, with the Vizakia Dam at just 1% capacity.
