Seeking Solutions for "Pame Express" - Drivers Risk Losing Licenses Due to Penalty Points

The Ministry of Transport is preparing proposals to attract professional drivers in order to ensure the uninterrupted operation of the "Pame Express" service. The contracting company has stated that it will keep the service running for at least the next two months, awaiting a comprehensive proposal that will definitively solve the problem. The issue of the "Pame Express" service was extensively discussed in the Transport Committee on Thursday, as were the problems faced by bus drivers with the traffic camera system. The "Pame Express" service serves 500-600 people daily, and a total of 100,000 trips were recorded in 2025. The Ministry of Transport believes that it is the responsibility of the contracting company to find drivers, but recognizes the need for interventions to address the general shortage of drivers in Cyprus and Europe. Proposed solutions include lowering the age limit for obtaining professional driver's licenses and collaborating with the Ministry of Education to create relevant courses at MIEEK. In addition, the possibility of hiring drivers from third countries with experience with left-hand drive vehicles, such as India, was discussed. Representatives of workers and employers proposed various solutions, such as changing the law for the professional license and subsidizing driver training. However, there were also voices that emphasized that other routes should not be sacrificed to maintain "Pame Express".
