Security and Defence for All

The Minister of Defence, Vasilis Palmas, emphasized the importance of security and defence for peace and prosperity, especially for Cyprus due to its geostrategic position. Cyprus, as the Presidency of the EU, has a significant role to play in promoting maritime security and European cooperation to protect critical maritime infrastructure, in accordance with the European Maritime Security Strategy. As part of this, the upgrading of infrastructure in Cyprus is being promoted, such as the Port of Limassol and the Naval Base in Mari, as well as the Air Base in Paphos. The Minister of Defence stressed that the upgrading of the bases is essential to strengthen the defence and deterrent capability of Cyprus, given the geopolitical shifts in the region. Cyprus seeks to leverage its strategic position, in contrast to the past where major players exploited it without consulting with it. A key element of the strategy is the link between Cypriot security and broader European security. The government is pursuing specific actions and plans to strengthen defence and deter potential threats. The evaluation of the results will be done in the future, based on the implementation of the plans. Overall, Cyprus is promoting an integrated approach to security and defence, combining infrastructure upgrades, enhanced deterrence and close cooperation with the EU and international partners, with the aim of protecting its interests and ensuring peace and stability in the region.
