"Scissors" to Water: How the 10% Reduction in Water Supply Was Decided"

Published February 15, 2026, 12:19

Due to the low level of dam fullness (only 14.1%), the Ministry of Agriculture has decided to reduce the amount of water allocated to Provincial Self-Governing Organizations (PSGOs) by 10%. The Ministry estimates that this reduction will not cause significant problems, however the TAW expresses reservations and the PSGOs are concerned about potential disruptions to water supply. The decision was based on available water reserves in dams, taking into account the worst-case scenario and the capacity of desalination units. Despite the increase in water consumption in recent years (about 4-5% annually), the Ministry believes that the 10% reduction is manageable. A working group has been set up between TAW and PSGOs to find optimal ways to manage limited resources. However, the PSGOs express concerns, as the reduction may lead to cuts, especially in areas such as Nicosia and Limassol. Some PSGOs have already announced measures to avoid cuts, calling on citizens to take steps to conserve water.
