Scholz at Davos: Any Threat of Violent Territorial Seizure is Unacceptable

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated at the Davos Economic Forum that any threat of violent territorial seizure is unacceptable. He expressed support for the US focus on the Russian threat in the Arctic and announced Germany's intention to intensify its efforts in the region, assuring solidarity with Denmark and Greenland. Merz warned of the negative consequences of new tariffs on transatlantic relations, while welcoming Trump's statements about avoiding them. He pointed out that the global order is in turmoil due to the war in Ukraine, the rise of China, and the shift in US foreign policy. However, he stressed that Europe can shape the future, provided it faces the harsh reality. He agreed with the Canadian Prime Minister that the West must rely on its strength, not just its values. Merz emphasized that European power is based on security, competitiveness, and determination, calling for investment in defense and the economy. He expressed the need for closer cooperation with like-minded allies. At the same time, he warned that a world based solely on power is dangerous, highlighting Europe's ability to build alliances based on trust and respect. Finally, the German Chancellor expressed regret for the referral of the Mercosur agreement to the European Court of Justice, emphasizing the need for free trade and common rules. He reiterated the importance of a united, determined, and sovereign Europe, without neglecting the importance of NATO and the transatlantic relationship.
